In European legal contexts, particularly within Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, an imprint (often termed Impressum or "site notice" in English) refers to a legally required statement on a website or in publications that lists the entity responsible for the content. 

This legal "imprint" is distinct from the branding or marketing definition of an imprint (a subsidiary brand name) and serves the following purposes:

  • Transparency & Accountability: It identifies the owner, operator, or responsible publisher, making it easier to identify who is behind a website and hold them accountable for content.
  • Mandatory Requirements: Commercial websites operating within these regions are generally required to have an Impressum, often in the footer.
  • Required Information: A legally compliant Impressum must include the full name of the owner, physical business address, contact information (email and phone), and registration details (e.g., VAT number or commercial register).
  • Legal Consequences: Lack of an Impressum can result in significant fines (up to €50,000 in Germany) or legal warnings (Abmahnung) from competitors.

This legal requirement ensures that users can easily check the reliability of a website, especially when products or services are offered.
